How It Works: Adjustable Rake

The fork and headstock are attached to the frame on a pivot. A pair of pre-drilled plywood panels act as an indexer and allow the rake angle to be changed easily and accurately. A steel pin holds the indexer securely in place.

Part of my methodology is for everything to be easily and accurately repeatable. With the indexer, the angles are preset and easily used over and over.

The CAD drawings show the same settings as the photos. Both configurations show 2" of trail, but the rake angle varies from zero (vertical) to forty degrees.

Using a computer allowed for very accurate design tolerances and post-construction analysis shows I came very close to spec.

The span of rake adjustment, starting at minus five, is just over fifty degrees which is plenty for my needs.
