ProjectVF: The Passive Restraint System
Safety is paramount. While this vehicle won't be as
safe as a car, it will be far, far safer (and far more comfortable) than any
standard motorcycle, including Harleys and Gold Wings. Behind the seat will
be a reinforced roll loop, extending above the rider's shoulders . The
deeply bolstered seat and multi-point racing harness will keep the rider
secured. Side loops will prevent the rider being
pinned underneath in the event of a tip over. I also have some ideas about a passive
restraint system similar to those used on roller coasters, as shown in the
sketches below. Click on any to see a larger version.
Side crash and tip over protection can be combined,
as well as providing an armrest. Why not increase the functionality by using
it as the center stand? As the side bars rotate down, the shoulder bars and
roll loop, connected by an internal linkage, would rotate up and out of the
way. The easier something is, the more likely it will be used. Why not make
it foolproof?
